Two decades of physio, a lifetime of running

Before co-founding UC Physio Stuart Stevenson spent his evenings chasing lane lines on the track. That athlete’s background still informs every consultation he delivers today. Twenty-plus years on the Gold Coast have taken him from weekend-warrior over-use injuries to complex spinal presentations, yet the guiding ideas stay the same: move well, load smartly, respect the nervous system and never guess when you can measure.

Stuart’s clinical passion centres on shoulders, spines and the interplay between spinal mechanics, hypermobility and dysautonomia. Runners who battle recurring back tightness, scapular restriction or unexplained post-race dizziness value his knack for tracing symptoms to their mechanical root and building step-by-step solutions.

What Stuart brings to runners

  1. McKenzie Method (MDT) expertise
Stuart lectures on MDT at Bond University and has used its systematic assessment approach for years. Runners receive clear classification, targeted self-management drills and objective progress checks.
  2. DMA Clinical Pilates certification
Strengthening the kinetic chain through controlled, run-specific Pilates sequences helps stabilise hypermobile joints and refine posture under fatigue.
  3. Hands-on & dry-needling skill set
Manual techniques and needling settle irritable tissue quickly so you can return to mileage while the deeper correction work unfolds.
  4. Holistic load planning
Expect education around footwear rotation, track vs road volume, recovery windows and strength adjuncts; all tailored to your season goals.

Session flow

  • History and functional screen: running volume, previous injuries, flexibility profile, autonomic symptoms.
  • Mechanical assessment: McKenzie MDT spine and shoulder testing plus lower-limb kinetic-chain checks.
  • Treatment: manual therapy, dry needling or joint mobilisation where indicated, followed by DMA Clinical Pilates or strength drills.
  • Self-management: clear exercise videos, symptom trackers and staging criteria so you know exactly when to progress.
